Educational Outreach

The RHCPA Education Program provides opportunities for people of all ages to engage in the performing art, taking its theatre programs off the stage and into your classroom. Educators, Teachers, and Students can attend a number of educational and entertaining shows specifically programmed to meet curriculum needs throughout the school year. Pre- and Post- Show workshops are available.

Have a Teaching Artist visit your classroom, camp program, or after school activity for a fun Intensive workshop in Intro to Drama, Intro to Musical Theatre, Hip Hop Dance, Improv, or Stage Combat. We'll be happy to work with you to find a program that best suits your needs. Participate in a number of our daytime, after-school, and weekend programs. From Tots to 55+, there is a performing arts program for everyone. Looking for summer fun? The RHCPA has theatre camp options from 4 years old to 16 years old. All participants get a chance to shine under the spotlight.

Education Series 23.24

For the 23.24 season, we have a roster of shows from around the country (our first completely Canadian season!), of stories to relate to, and of stories to expand our own experiences. Students will be able to dance in their seats, be amazed at what the human body can do, will themselves reflected on stage and will be challenged by new ideas. We have a variety of shows for all grade levels, from preschool to high school and beyond, each with Ontario Curriculum connections.

Available shows:
Ridge

Often called the “battle that made Canada,” Vimy Ridge resulted in over 10,000 Canadian casualties. Through direct storytelling, verbatim theatre, and live music, Brendan McLeod examines misconceptions and varying perspectives around the battle, while drawing parallels to other formative events in our nation’s past. Featuring inventive musical interpretations of WWI soldier songs, Ridge probes difficult yet necessary questions about how and why we grieve. A vivid, kinetic ride through history, as well as an intimate, personal examination of our connection to the past, Ridge is a visceral work that passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives.

The Money Tree

When Shasta’s father loses his job, she is devastated to learn that previously laid plans for her upcoming birthday party must be significantly downsized. As the story progresses, Shasta and Simon meet a mysterious traveler who gives them a seed that will make a tree grow leaves of money. Through a truly magical journey, the two ultimately learn that being a loyal friend is worth more than a big party or having all the latest toys. In the end, our friends, family and imaginations are truly our greatest assets.

It's Okay to be Different

With his signature blend of playfulness and sensitivity, Todd Parr explores important and timely subjects. It’s Okay to Be Different cleverly delivers the important messages of acceptance, understanding, and self-confidence. Equally whimsical and heartfelt, The Earth Book, is a sweet homage to our beautiful planet inspiring readers of all ages to do their part to keep the Earth happy and healthy. This is My Hair is a funny exploration of how silly hair can be and that no matter how your hair looks, always feel good about yourself. Mermaid’s new show will be directed and adapted by Jim Morrow, veteran director of numerous internationally acclaimed Mermaid productions. It features a diverse cast, an innovative approach to puppetry manipulation and construction, combined with playful original music for which the company has earned worldwide praise.

Celebrate: Holiday from a Global Village

This concert gives young audiences an exhilarating glimpse into the mosaic of Holiday customs, celebrations and festivities enjoyed in Canada - Indigenous traditions, Ramadan, Bodhi Day (Buddhist), Carnival (Quebec), Chanukah, Chinese New Year, Christmas, Diwali, Kwanzaa (Pan-African), Halloween and Winter Solstice. Joining Chris McKhool are special guests Shannon Thunderbird (Indigenous Elder) and Sandy Horne (The Spoons), Aviva Chernick (Jaffa Road), Colombia’s Juan Carlos Medrano, Maryem and Ernie Tollar, and Sultans of String band members Kevin Laliberté and Drew Birston.

Ill-Abilities

This crew originated from an idea by Montreal-based dancer/motivational speaker Luca "Lazylegz" Patuelli to create an all-star team of some of the world's best differently-abled dancers. ILL-ABILITIES™ was officially formed in 2007 and gets its name from the standard in hip-hop culture of using a negative term to refer to something positive. Examples of this can be heard in studios or at competitions where dancers compliment each other by saying they were bad, nasty or mean. The "ill" in ILL-ABILITIES™ does not refer to "sick" or "unwell" but rather to incredible, amazing, intricate, talent. Rather than seeing the negative limitations of "disability", this crew focuses on their positive, or "ill", abilities.
Today, ILL-ABILITIES™ spreads positive thinking by sharing their stories with motivational entertainment programs and theatrical dance performances worldwide.

TEASING GRAVITY by Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre

Animated by CCDT Artistic Director Deborah Lundmark, the program includes a fabulous array of dances selected to leave you and your students breathless with the art form’s endless possibilities. Performances are 60 minutes long including a Q&A session with CCDT dancers.

Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre is a Toronto-based repertory company of exceptional next-generation artists founded in 1980 by Artistic Director Deborah Lundmark and Managing Director Michael deConinck Smith. Highlights include appearances at Toronto’s Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra Theatres, five invitations to the Canada Dance Festival, tours to Singapore, Malaysia, China, Scotland and NYC, and a featured appearance at Fall For Dance North, Toronto’s premiere international dance festival.

Outside

Outside is the story of Daniel, a teen who triumphs over homophobic bullying, depression and suicide. At his new school he shares his story at a meeting of the Gay Straight Alliance. Meanwhile, at his old school, struggling to come to terms with what happened, his friends Krystina and Jeremy attempt to start their own GSA. Through flashbacks, we travel through Daniel’s harrowing experience with bullying that began with a taunt and a text message and eventually led to a serious physical assault. Three friends, two high schools, one lunch hour.

Jungle Book

From the creators of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, which the New York Times called “Jaw-Dropping,” comes the new theatrical adaptation of the works of Rudyard Kipling, re-imagining his classic stories through modern eyes. Immersive sound and multimedia will transport you from the urban jungle to relive Mowgli’s childhood in the jungles of India. With Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, and more, Jungle Book brings beloved characters to life in a way you’ve never seen before. Eye-popping video, shadow-play, and original music make this family production of Jungle Book “like stepping inside a beautifully illustrated children’s storybook. It’s a MAGICAL experience!”- Sarasota Observer “A MUST-SEE”- Broadway World.

Lig and Bittle

Lig is very tall, and Bittle is very small. They both wish they could find someplace where everything is just the right size for each of them, where no one will notice that they are different. When Lig and Bittle hear about Perfeckt Phitt, they set out on a quest to this wonderful place where all their problems will be solved. Can Lig and Bittle overcome the Muckety Muck and the Ooga Monster to find the place where they both fit in?
